Location: 12-minute walk to the Wheaton Metro red line, just north of the DC Beltway (I-495). Union Station, in downtown DC, is a 22-minute metro ride. Complimentary rides to NIH, but a 14-20 minute RideOn Route 34 also works. Buses Q1, Q2, Q4, Q5, & Q6 get you to downtown (northern) Rockville. Downtown Silver Spring is 2 metro stops away but the Q1, Q2, Q4 buses are a little faster due to the long escalator and biking is fastest. Metro Center is 28 minutes away. A Safeway grocery store is right at the metro, and we're within walking distance to the biggest shopping complex on the metro (including Target, Costco, Giant Food, Macys, 80 nearby restaurants, and 16 bars).
The neighborhood is opposite that of DC in many ways. For example, it's 12.44/1.73=7.2 times safer then DC proper. The ethnicity is 73%W, 5%B, 13%H, 5%A, 4%O vs. 44%W, 49%B,H, 3%A, 1%O. Life expectancy here is in the top 99.97%=3141/3142 while DC was in the bottom ~16%.
The safer, NW area is mostly serviced by the Red Line. It is "U" shaped. Because the number of cars in each direction has to be the same, yet the population density is much higher on the west side, our side gives arguably better access to downtown DC. This is also true if you drive; Wisconsin Ave. becomes a parking lot during rush hour while George Ave. (|| but east) at least keeps moving. Unless you want to live far from a metro stop, it's also quieter here because most other metro stops are above ground.
Rent: $600/month. There's no deposit. You can either sign a one-year lease or pay a one-time $100 fee which would allow you to leave pretty much any time you felt like (even after a week if you wished, but we do ask that you give 30 days notice). The $100 option financially rewards staying longer, so, it does the same thing as a lease, but without any risk of you getting stuck with a roommate who was only nice before you all signed on the dotted line.
Room details: The room has a keyed lock, bed, desk, small dresser, comfy chair, and a closet with an iron and ironing board. There's wireless, but there’s also a wired connection because wireless isn't as secure and can't make full use of our fiber optic connection. The temperature is adjustable to your liking, with strong, floor-specific central air conditioning (AC) and heat. Everything not new in the room will be washed, including the pillows, and the mattress will be fully aired out.
There is no TV in the room, but on the same floor is a 65” home theater TV with surround sound 5.0. We currently subscribe to HBO+, The Movie Channel, Showtime, Epix, STARZ, Sundance, FLIX, NFL RedZone, Cinemax, IFC, EPIX, Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon as well as hundreds of other channels in HD via our fiber optic link. The example images show how to watch a movie, whenever you want, on the premium The Movie Channel network.
By the way, in case you didn't know, Amazon, Netflix, and Hulu spend ~$14 Billion a year making movies and shows, so, just to stay current, you might want access to these new studios. Though they might be a threat to the old-school Hollywood establishment studios, those are also accessible via the brand new AMC Wheaton 9 movie theater that is a short 5-minute walk away.
Bathrooms: There is no bathroom inside the room, but there is one just outside it. There is another "backup" full bathroom, so you would always have access to a bathroom.
House details: This is a large house with a working fireplace, weight room, rec room with 65" HDTV with the on-demand movie libraries listed above. The kitchen has most of the gadgets you blissfully but mistakenly thought you'd use. All dishes are cleaned, sterilized, and and put back each day, and the bathrooms and common areas are cleaned at least weekly. There's a deck, outdoor grill, hammock, greenhouse, and flower garden.
Existing housemates: 50-50 coed, which is why the next person in should be a woman to maintain the current "Friends-like" atmosphere. Very "brainy." (Most have PhDs, two in physics.) We have a game night and do stuff together when there's time. We work together so there's less duplication and wasted trips, so you'd have access to free grocery pickup, bikes, spare laptops, GPSes, a printer, tools, laundry detergent, filtered water, clean and humidified air (no more bloody noses during winter; MPR 2800 air filters means bbye to allergies and alleged brain damage), tea, and coffee.
Availability date: We are more interested in finding another good housemate than good calendar and budgetary matches, so if you are interested let us know your dates and tell us a little about yourself. You can mail us at annmay5 at verizon dot net or you can call 3OI+933+3953. If you text to this number it will not usually get transmitted. All inquiries will still be answered or responded to within 12 hours, so if there is no response within 12 hours, try again, as we definitely did not get your message or you didn't get our response. This is true even if it isn't a good match. To avoid our email address getting into any spam databases, our email address isn't in the samslist system. So, you cannot use the form to contact us and you'll need to send an email directly to us.
